A Bar at the Folies-Bergere
Reverse side, where you can see the swirly cutting pattern. Also the dropout
can be seen more clearly here.
A Bar at the Folies-Bergere (oil painting 1882 by Edouard Manet) swirly cut |
[excerpted from mystudios.com] This work is Manet's preeminent masterpiece and one of the most compelling paintings ever created. The painting is made up of fragments of stories and illusions. The most intense feature of this practice of illusionism is the dynamic contrast between the courtesans and whores residing in the background and the still, calm, melancholy young woman.
The sliver dropout of the man at the bar fills in the missing person who is reflected in the mirror, an "error" many erroneously believed was an accident by Manet.
